Induction PowerPoints/ Case of the Weeping Widow

These presentations are from the "Logic and Critical Thinking" class taught at CSU Chico by Greg Tropea and Curtis Peldo.

Induction Part I

Induction Part II .

Here is the homework:

Inspector Walker of the local police stopped by the house of Thomas Stanwick, amatuer logician, late one afternoon.

"Glad to see you, Matt," said Stanwick, "Would you can for a drink?"

"I just dropped in to say hello and to see if you had any thoughts on the museum robbery."

Stanwick looked puzzled as he handed his friend a cold drink. "Musuem robbery?"

"Yes. A solid gold statuette of the Weeping Widow by Rudault was stolen last Saturday night from the museum. We have in custody the three who were invovled in the theft: Michael Agusto, Maureen Berry, and Richard Casey."

"Already in custody?" said Stanwick. "That's great, but I hardly see why you want my opinion."

"As I say," continued Walker, we know they were invovled, but we don't know which drove the getaway car, which acted as the lookout during the robbery, and which committed the actual theft. We do know that the thief, unlike the others, was an expert lockpick, and that the thief and the driver cased the site during the week before the theft. They've each been interogated with the polygraph, but the results are maddeningly ambiguous."

"What did they say?"

"Berry refused to talk at all. And the others made only two statements each. Agusto said, '1. I don't know how to pick locks. 2. Casey was the thief."

"Casey said, 'Berry wasn't the lookout. 2. I didn't case the museum before the theft.'.

"The problem is that our polygraph is behaving erratically again. All we can tell is that each man made one true statement and one false statement. But we do not know which is which."

Stanwick laughed, "Based on what you've said, I can identify the thief, the lookout, and the driver for you."

Can you?
